⚡ Private Players Challenge Eskom as Discovery Launches R10bn Renewable Projects

South Africa renewable energy solar and wind projects

Modimolle, Limpopo – October 7, 2025 – The South African energy landscape is shifting rapidly as private players step into a market long dominated by Eskom. The latest development comes from Discovery Green, which has committed to investing nearly R10 billion in large-scale solar and wind projects to supply some of the country’s biggest businesses with clean energy.

According to a recent report by BizNews, Discovery Green has secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the 335 MW Tournee Solar Park in Mpumalanga and the 400 MW Overberg Wind Farm, both expected to begin commercial operation in 2027. Together, these projects are set to offset over 1.15 million tonnes of CO2 annually — a move hailed as one of the most ambitious private renewable energy plays in South Africa to date.

Breaking Eskom’s Monopoly

Discovery Green’s projects highlight a growing shift: large corporations are no longer waiting on Eskom’s struggling grid. Instead, they are sourcing affordable, long-term renewable energy directly from independent producers. Among the confirmed customers for Discovery’s clean power are Impala Platinum, Southern Sun, Fortress REIT, Balwin Properties, and The Capital Hotels and Apartments.

This trend has triggered strong resistance from Eskom, which has launched legal challenges against the licensing of private energy traders, claiming concerns over revenue loss. However, industry experts argue that competition is both legal and necessary to modernize South Africa’s energy sector.

A Growing Market for Renewable Power

While Discovery’s mega-projects make headlines, they are part of a broader movement in which independent producers — like NileSun Energy — are taking an active role in delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. With South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) calling for massive renewable energy expansion, opportunities for private investment in solar and wind continue to grow.

NileSun Energy’s own 100 MW Renosterpoort Solar Farm in Limpopo is aligned with this national transition. The project will generate clean electricity, avoid more than 200,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, and create over 2,500 jobs during its construction and operational phases.

The Future of Power in South Africa

The Discovery Green projects are proof that renewable energy is no longer a side initiative — it is becoming the mainstream power solution for South Africa’s economy. For communities, businesses, and investors, this signals a future where energy is not just more sustainable but also more secure and cost-effective.

At NileSun Energy, we welcome these developments and remain committed to expanding South Africa’s solar potential while ensuring that local communities benefit through education, skills development, healthcare, and sustainable job creation.
